Bernal Heights bliss.

Alas, our visit to the Alemany Flea Market last Sunday did not yield any switchblades, irresistibly awesome vinyl records, or mid-century modern side chairs... We did, however, walk away with some used dvds, a vintage Missoula, MT postcard, and a yellow orchid I'll no doubt kill in a couple weeks time. Our best find of the day though was the neighborhood that hosts this junk-fest, Bernal Heights. Located just south of the Mission and nestled snugly between 280 and the 101, Bernal Heights is just about the cutest damn place you've ever seen. A little off the beaten path, Bernal Heights is the San Francisco neighborhood we've been waiting to discover. You will surely not find a tourist or a cable car here. What you will find is lesbian bars, meat markets, book stores, neighborhood restaurants, and tons and tons of dogs. As we explored the hilly streets, we were filled with the same elation as when we first discovered Jersey City. Almost without speaking, we both came to the same conclusion, "We must live here." You could say we found our Rushmore. Until Bernal Heights came along, we were quite happy with our digs in Russian Hill. But the grass is always greener, isn't it? Well in this case there is just a lot more of it. Dog havens Bernal Heights Hill and Holly Park, who could resist? So we've got 8 months left on our lease, then its time to pack the u-haul one more time.
